The Meaning of Meditation

Meditation is a technique
to find the part of yourself beyond thought.

It is the way to approach God.

Faith is not needed
when truth is experienced directly.

Don’t believe everything you think!

You are not your thoughts.

The mind is powerful –
a servant when yoked to Reason,
but a tyrant when undisciplined.

The normal mind jumps like a monkey.
To hear truth,
you must catch the jumping mind.

Meditation is the technique
to still the mind.

The technique is simply
to bring attention to a point.

The single point can be a mantra,
a rosary, a mandala, a candle flame,
physical activity, or the sound Om.

The simplest method is to focus on the breath.

But don’t get stuck on emptiness.

Find the shining mind beyond the stirring mind,
seek the open mind beyond the dwelling mind.

The Taoists say there is no need
to stay by the furnace and watch the firing.
Just settle spirit and breath, and trust nature.
When exhalation and inhalation stop,
and the body is as though dead,
you will realize meditation
is just a temporary device.
